Somerset, KY–Somerset Community College (SCC) will celebrate its 18th annual Earth Day celebration on Sunday, April 26, from 1:00 to 4:30 p.m., inviting community members of all ages to enjoy an afternoon focused on environmental education, sustainability, and hands‑on fun. The event is free, open to the public, and will be held rain or shine.
This year’s Earth Day celebration will feature a wide range of exhibitors, demonstrations, and interactive activities, offering guests the opportunity to learn more about protecting the environment while enjoying family-friendly entertainment.
“This is the 18th year we have been proud to host Earth Day at SCC, and it continues to grow each year,” said Kelly Johnson, SCC Professor of Biology. “Our goal is to create an event where people of all ages can come together, learn something new, and leave inspired to care for our planet.”
A strong lineup of environmental and wildlife partners will be on hand, including Liberty Nature Center, Cumberland Falls State Resort Park Critters, and more! Guests will also have the chance to explore local gardening and conservation efforts with Glory Gardens Greenhouse and Joy of Natives Plant Nursery.
In addition, attendees can view electric vehicle displays, visit educational exhibits, and enjoy many hands-on activities for children. Popular favorites such as the butterfly tent will return, along with rain barrels, trees, and plant giveaways, while supplies last.
“We’re excited to offer a mix of fun activities and meaningful education,” Johnson said. “From wildlife encounters to sustainability demonstrations, this event highlights simple ways individuals can make a positive impact in their everyday lives.”
For the second year in a row, SCC will also host a speaker series, featuring sessions on topics such as electric vehicles, beekeeping and monarchs and other endangered species in KY.
“The speaker series allows guests to dive deeper into important environmental topics and hear directly from knowledgeable experts,” Johnson said. “It’s another way we’re working to inspire conversations about sustainability across our region.”
Somerset Community College encourages individuals and families to attend, explore the exhibits, and enjoy an afternoon dedicated to appreciating, learning about, and protecting the environment.
