In one of the most shocking moves of the 2025 MLB season, the San Francisco Giants have acquired three-time All-Star Rafael Devers from the Boston Red Sox, signaling a bold shift for both franchises. The Giants sent a hefty package — including lefty Kyle Harrison, fireballer Jordan Hicks, and prospects James Tibbs III and Jose Bello — in exchange for Boston’s longtime offensive powerhouse.
San Francisco will absorb the remainder of Devers’ $313.5 million contract, banking on the 28-year-old’s left-handed power to supercharge their playoff push. Devers, hitting .272 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs, joins a Giants roster already anchored by Matt Chapman at third base, raising questions about where Devers will slot defensively — if at all.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox continue their youth movement after friction with Devers over positional changes and organizational decisions. Harrison, once a top pitching prospect, headlines the return as Boston seeks to rebuild its pitching corps around emerging talent.
“This is something we really needed,” said Giants manager Bob Melvin. “He’s tailor-made for our ballpark.”
While Boston parts ways with another franchise cornerstone, San Francisco bets big on a player they believe can carry them deep into October — and maybe all the way.
