Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson to Start Season on Injured List Orioles’ Gunnar Henderson to Start Season on Injured List

The Baltimore Orioles have announced that star shortstop Gunnar Henderson will begin the 2025 season on the injured list due to a strained intercostal muscle sustained on February 27 during a Grapefruit League game.

Henderson, 23, experienced the injury after making a leaping catch in a spring training game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Despite resuming some baseball activities recently, his recovery has not progressed sufficiently to meet the Opening Day timeline.

General Manager Mike Elias emphasized a cautious approach to Henderson’s recovery, stating, “We’re going to try and get him out there as soon as possible. Obviously, I’m very hopeful that the IL stint will be measured in days instead of weeks, but I don’t have a crystal ball.”

Henderson’s absence is a significant blow to the Orioles, who are also dealing with injuries to other key players, including pitcher Grayson Rodriguez.

The Orioles are hopeful that Henderson’s time on the injured list will be brief, aiming for a return measured in days rather than weeks. His progress will be closely monitored to ensure a full recovery before rejoining the lineup.
