Gayle King has addressed the backlash following her participation in Blue Origin’s all-female spaceflight on April 14, 2025. The mission, which included notable figures like Katy Perry and Lauren Sánchez, faced criticism over its cost and perceived extravagance.
In response, King emphasized the mission’s scientific objectives. She highlighted that fellow passengers, including a rocket scientist and an astrophysicist-activist, conducted experiments during the flight, contributing valuable data for future research. King stated, “Every time one of those goes up, you get some information that can be used for something else.”
Addressing the terminology used by critics, King expressed disappointment over the trip being labeled a “ride,” arguing that such language diminishes the mission’s significance. She noted that male astronauts are rarely subjected to similar descriptors. King also acknowledged her initial skepticism about space travel expenses but explained that learning about Blue Origin’s environmental initiatives changed her perspective.
Despite the criticism, King remains proud of the mission’s inspirational impact, particularly on young women. She encouraged detractors to research Blue Origin’s work before forming opinions, stating, “I wish people would do more due diligence.”
