Sports Update: Thursday, February 29th

In Wednesday’s high school basketball action, the Pulaski County Lady Maroons clinched a narrow 44-43 victory over Rockcastle County in the Girls 47th District Championship game. Both teams secured spots in the upcoming 12th Region Tournament.

On Thursday, the Boys 47th District Championship game will feature the Somerset Briar Jumpers (19-10) against the Pulaski Co. Maroons (19-9) at Rockcastle Co. High School, with tipoff set for 7p. Live coverage will begin at 6:40p on Somerset 106.1 FM & Somerset106.com. Additionally, the Girls 48th District championship game will see the Wayne Co. Lady Cardinals (14-15) facing off against the Southwestern Lady Warriors (18-11) at Southwestern High School, with tipoff scheduled for 7p.

Friday night will feature the Boys 48th District Championship game between the Southwestern Warriors (14-15) and the Wayne Co. Cardinals (23-7) at Southwestern High School, with tipoff at 7p.

In college basketball, the WKU Hilltoppers suffered a 90-84 loss to Louisiana Tech in their final regular season home game. Up next, the Hilltoppers (19-9/8-6 CUSA) will face the Florida International Panthers (9-19/4-9 CUSA) in Miami on Saturday, with tipoff at 6p ET and live coverage beginning at 5:30p on WTLO AM 1480/97.7 FM.

Former Kentucky Wildcats coach Tubby Smith was named a 2024 SEC Legend in recognition of his accomplishments during his tenure at UK, including winning the 1998 NCAA Championship. A ceremony to honor Smith and other SEC Legends will take place at this year’s SEC Tournament.

In MLB Cactus League action on Thursday, the Cincinnati Reds will take on the Los Angeles Dodgers in Goodyear AZ. at 8:05p ET, with live coverage beginning at 7:50p on WTLO AM 1480/97.7 FM.

Thursday’s women’s college basketball matchup will feature the Ole Miss Rebels (20-7/10-4 SEC) against the Kentucky Wildcats (11-17/4-10 SEC) at Rupp Arena, with tipoff at 7p on SEC Network Plus.

On Saturday, the Arkansas Razorbacks (14-14/5-10 SEC) will face the No. 16 Kentucky Wildcats (20-8/10-5 SEC) at Rupp Arena. The Wildcats lead the overall series 35-14 and have won the last two games against the Razorbacks. Tipoff is set for 1:30p on CBS.
