Thursday High School Sports Recap: Soccer, Volleyball, and Big Commitments

High School Soccer Action: Thursday brought a mix of results for our local girls’ soccer teams. The Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers fell to Garrard County 7-2, while the Southwestern Lady Warriors earned a strong 3-1 victory over North Laurel. Meanwhile, the Pulaski County Lady Maroons battled to a 1-1 draw with South Laurel.

Volleyball Results: In volleyball, the Pulaski County Lady Maroons swept the Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers 3-0, continuing their dominant form. The Somerset Christian School Lady Cougars also came out on top, defeating Wayne County 3-0.

Basketball Recruiting: In a major basketball development, Jasper Johnson, the 5-star recruit and the No. 12 overall player in the nation, has committed to the University of Kentucky. Johnson chose the Wildcats over programs like Alabama, Arkansas, and Louisville, further strengthening UK’s recruiting class.

MLB Thursday: The Cincinnati Reds completed a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros with a narrow 1-0 victory at Great American Ball Park. Ty France provided the offense with a solo homer, while rookie pitcher Rhett Lowder impressed in his second MLB start, going 6.1 innings and allowing just four hits. The Reds (68-73) head to New York for a 10-game road trip, kicking off Friday with a three-game series against the Mets. Fernando Cruz (3-8, 4.99 ERA) will start for Cincinnati. Thursday Night NFL Recap: The Kansas City Chiefs edged the Baltimore Ravens 27-20 in the NFL season opener, setting the tone for what promises to be another exciting season.

  • The undefeated Somerset Briar Jumpers (2-0) travel to Barbourville to face the Knox Central Panthers (0-2).   • The Pulaski County Maroons (1-1) host the George Rogers Clark Cardinals (2-0) in their home opener, also kicking off at 7:30 PM.

Saturday College Football Preview:

  • The Kentucky Wildcats (1-0) host the South Carolina Gamecocks (1-0) at Kroger Field. South Carolina leads the overall series 20-13-1, including a 9-8 record in Lexington, and is looking for its third consecutive win over the Wildcats. Kickoff is at 3:30 PM on ABC-TV.
  • The EKU Colonels (0-1) travel to Bowling Green to take on the WKU Hilltoppers (0-1) at Houchens/Smith Stadium. WKU holds a 48-35-3 series lead, with a strong home record of 33-13-1 in Bowling Green. Live coverage begins at 6:00 PM on WTLO AM 1480/97.7 FM, with kickoff at 7:00 PM ET.

Sunday NFL Season Opener: The Cincinnati Bengals open their 2024 season at home against the New England Patriots at Paycor Stadium. The Bengals finished last season at 9-8, narrowly missing the playoffs, while the Patriots struggled to a 4-13 finish. The all-time series favors New England 17-10, but the Bengals are looking to even the score at home, where the series is tied 7-7.
