Thursday High School Soccer:

  • Garrard Green County defeated the Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers with a score of 9-4.
  • Garrard County shut out the Southwestern Lady Warriors, winning 2-0.
  • In boys’ soccer, Wayne County edged out Pulaski County with a 1-0 victory.
  • Garrard County also topped Somerset Christian School, 2-1.

Thursday High School Volleyball:

  • Adair County swept the Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers 3-0.

Thursday MLB:

TJ Friedl delivered a clutch two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Cincinnati Reds to a thrilling 10-9 comeback win over the Oakland Athletics in the series finale at GABP. Will Benson and Tyler Stephenson both homered for the Reds.

The Reds (64-70, 4th NL Central) kick off a four-game weekend series against the Milwaukee Brewers (77-56, 1st NL Central) at GABP with a day/night doubleheader on Friday. Game one, at 12:40 PM, is a makeup from a rainout on April 11th. RHP Nick Martinez (6-6, 3.62 ERA) will start the opener for the Reds. In game two, highly touted RHP Rhett Lowder will make his major league debut at 6:40 PM. The No. 7 overall pick in the 2023 draft out of Wake Forest, Lowder has spent much of this season at AA-Chattanooga, posting a 4-4 record with a 4.31 ERA in 16 starts. He recently made his AAA-Louisville debut on August 22nd, throwing six shutout innings. The series continues Saturday at 7:15 PM, with the finale on Sunday at 12:10 PM. Coverage on Friday and Sunday will be on WTLO AM 1480/97.7 FM.

Friday High School Football:

  • The Somerset Briar Jumpers (1-0) take on the Russell County Lakers (0-1) with a kickoff at 7:30 PM ET. Somerset is coming off a dominating 48-7 win over Perry County Central, while the Lakers are looking to bounce back after a 22-16 loss to Adair County last week. Last season, Somerset edged Russell County 28-24 at Clark Field. Since 1998, Somerset leads the series 10-3, with Russell County’s last win coming in 2008. Live coverage starts at 7:15 PM, with kickoff at 8:00 PM ET on Somerset 106.1 FM & Somerset106.com.
  • The Pulaski County Maroons (0-1) face the Danville Admirals (0-1) with a 7:30 PM ET kickoff.
  • The Southwestern Warriors (0-1) have an open date this week. They return to action on Friday, September 6th, against South Warren in Bowling Green.

Saturday College Football:

  • The Kentucky Wildcats begin their 134th football season by hosting the Southern Miss Golden Eagles from the Sun Belt Conference. UK leads the overall series 3-1, with the Golden Eagles pulling off a comeback win in 2016 by scoring 34 unanswered points. The Cats won the last meeting 24-17 in 2017. Kentucky has won 19 of its last 21 nonconference games and holds a 90-37-5 record in season openers, including 7-3 under head coach Mark Stoops. Starting QB Brock Vandagriff, who transferred from Georgia, played in 13 games over the last three seasons without starting. Kickoff is at 7:45 PM ET, with live coverage on SEC Network.
  • The Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers (CUSA) open their season on the road against the No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide (SEC). WKU is 63-36-6 all-time in season openers and has won three straight. WKU starting QB TJ Finley, who has previously played for Texas State, Auburn, and LSU, threw for 3,439 yards and 24 touchdowns with just 8 interceptions last season. This will be Finley’s first start at WKU. Alabama leads the series 3-0, with their last win coming in 2016 by a score of 38-10.
