Thursday Sports Recap

High School Soccer:

  • Girls:
    • Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers defeated Danville 5-2.
    • Pulaski County Lady Maroons and Wayne County ended in a 0-0 draw.
  • Boys:
    • Danville edged out Somerset 3-2.
    • North Laurel dominated Southwestern with an 8-0 victory.
    • Pulaski County shut out Whitley County 7-0.

High School Volleyball:

  • Somerset Christian School Lady Cougars swept Clinton County 2-0.
  • Southwestern Lady Warriors triumphed over Boyle County in a close 3-2 match.

MLB:

In the opener of their four-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cincinnati Reds struggled offensively, managing just five hits in a 7-0 loss. The series continues on Friday night at 6:40 PM, with LHP Andrew Abbott (10-10, 3.72 ERA) starting for the Reds. The weekend games are set for Saturday at 6:40 PM and Sunday at 1:35 PM. NFL:

In their final preseason exhibition game, the Cincinnati Bengals fell to the Indianapolis Colts 27-14. Bengals starting QB Joe Burrow, along with many other projected starters, did not play. The Bengals finished the exhibition season 0-3. They will kick off the 2024 regular season at home against the New England Patriots on Sunday, September 9th, with a 1:00 PM kickoff. Friday High School Football:

  • Somerset Briar Jumpers will open their season against the Perry County Central Commodores (7-5 in 2023) at Clark Field. Somerset, who finished 10-4 last season, lost to PCC 21-20 in their previous matchup in Hazard. Live coverage with Jon Burlew, Tim Washam, and Bruce Singleton begins at 6:45 PM, with kickoff at 7:30 PM on Somerset 106.1 FM & Somerset106.com.
  • Pulaski County Maroons (4-8 in 2023) will face the Beechwood Tigers (12-2 in 2023) in Corbin, with a 5:45 PM kickoff.
  • Southwestern Warriors (9-4 in 2023) will play against the North Hardin Trojans (1-10 in 2023) in Campbellsville on Saturday, with a 3:00 PM kickoff.

College Football:

Six University of Kentucky Wildcats were named to the Preseason All-Southeastern Conference football team: WR/return specialist Barion Brown, offensive linemen Eli Cox and Marques Cox, linebacker Jamon Dumas-Johnson, defensive back Maxwell Hairston, and defensive lineman Deone Walker. The Wildcats will open their season on Saturday, August 31st, at home against Southern Miss, with a 7:45 PM kickoff.

Women’s College Basketball:

The University of Kentucky Women’s basketball team has released its full 2024-2025 schedule, featuring new head coach Kenny Brooks and the newly renovated Historic Memorial Coliseum. The season will include Big Blue Madness at Rupp Arena on October 11th and the Blue-White scrimmage at Memorial Coliseum on October 18th. The regular season will kick off at home against USC Upstate. Notable home games include matchups against Northern Kentucky on November 7th, Louisville Cardinals on November 16th, and WKU Hilltoppers on December 28th, leading into the SEC opener against Mississippi State on January 2nd.
